Online Education
Education is not just for schools and colleges. Lifelong learning allows us to educate ourselves all through our lives.

There are many websites where we can learn and some online courses may lead to a recognised qualification.

Eg. The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Set up by the British Computer Society, it teaches basic ICT knowledge and skills. Learners can sit tests, either online or at test centres, and, if they pass they will receive a widely recognised qualification.

A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is a set of learning tools designed to help students learn online.
  • A course is split up into a number of modules.
  • Each module is separately assessed - usually online.
  • Online tutors give assistance if needed.
  • Internet links to resources are provided.
  • Students can communicate online via email or designated chat rooms / bulletin boards.
Distance Learning - Students use the Internet, email and videoconferencing to 'attend' classes without actually being at the place where the teaching takes place.

Distance learning courses are usually interactive and can be taken by widely dispersed students.

Chat rooms may be used for online discussion of topics with tutors or experts.

Authoring software is used to create CBT software and allows the creation of multimedia presentations, web pages and documents.
