Cookies
A cookie is a small text file saved on a customer's computer. The cookie contains information that can identify the customer.

Cookies are stored in a special folder on the hard drive. The information stored is coded to keep the file small.

When a customer first visits a transactional website, they may have to register - provide unique information such as name, email address etc.

The website sends a cookie which is stored on the customer's computer.

The next time the customer visits the website, the browser sends the cookie back to the website server. The website server identifies the customer who then may not need to provide the same information every time they visit.

The cookie may contain information about customer preferences (such as Language used) or about the number of times the customer has visited the website or details of past shopping history. The website server can customise the web page displayed.

Sometimes a cookie is used to record items a customer is placing in a shopping basket until the customer pays for them.

Generally, the website server will store information about the customer and only needs the cookie to identify who the customer is.
