Payment processing
When a customer buys anything from a transactional website, they must pay for it.

There are many different ways payments can be made but the most common is by using a credit or debit card.

Customers will need to enter details about their credit or debit card. These details must be sent over a secure link and are often encrypted to avoid problems with hackers intercepting the data.

When received, these details will be checked using a direct Internet link to the card issuing company or bank.

Often, a customer ordering goods from a company for the first time, can only have their goods delivered to the address held by the card company. This is to avoid goods being bought using stolen cards.

Security is a major issue here - often customers are worried about issuing card details over the Internet.
When the payment has been accepted, money will automatically be debited from the customer's account and credited to the retail company's account.
