Spyware
Spyware is software that covertly gathers information without the user's knowledge and transmits it through their Internet connection.

Spyware can often be incorporated into freeware or shareware - so be careful what you download!

The Spyware program monitors what the user is doing and transmits it to someone else.

Spyware can look at what websites a user is visiting and open relevant pop-up windows with advertisements.
Eg A user visiting a vehicle company's website can have a pop-up window about car insurance.

Some spyware merely collects marketing information - but beware - some spyware is malicious and can collect information such as credit card numbers or passwords.

Spyware may also...

  • change your Internet settings such as your Home page.
  • hog RAM and processing power because it is a program running in the background.
  • generate pop-up ads.
  • redirect web searches to return unwanted sites.
  • change firewall settings - letting in unwanted guests!

Programs exist that can detect and defend against spyware in a similar way to virus protection software.
Eg Windows Defender.  (free download)
