Shopping Systems
Many large shops and supermarkets now operate computer-based systems. These allow simple data entry systems, on-line payment and automatic stock control.

Goods may be labelled with bar codes that are passed over a bar code reader at the check out. The bar code is read and transmitted to a central computer that searches its database and returns the price and description of the item to the EPOS terminal. Data may also be input using a keypad.

The price and description of the item may be output on a small LED screen.

EPOS=Electronic Point Of Sale.

Payment for goods may be made by :

  • cash

  • cheque

  • card (debit or credit) using EFT

EFT = Electronic Funds Transfer

EFT allows customers to pay for goods using credit or debit cards. The amount of money is automatically transferred from the customer's bank account to the shop's bank account.

The shop may set its own pricing, such as for sales or special offers, by adjusting the price of the items on the computer database.
