School/College Administration
Many schools and colleges now use ICT methods for registration of students....

OMR - Optical Mark Recognition.

Marks are drawn against pupil names on printed sheets in pre-defined places. The completed sheets are fed into an Optical Mark Reader. Light is used to scan the sheets to detect where the marks have been placed.

  • quick and easy to fill in

  • fast to read the data on the forms.

  • data is automatically used as input to a computer for attendance analysis.

  • OMR forms need to be filled in carefully with a dark pen or pencil

  • OMR forms can be large if there are many pupils.

On-line

Pupil attendance data may be typed directly into a computer in each classroom. These are all connected by network to a file server where the data is collected and analysed.

The network may be a wireless LAN (Local Area Network).

Smart Cards

Each student may be given a Smart Card which they need to swipe through a Card Reader.

The Smart Card has a small chip embedded in it that includes memory storing data about the identity of the student.

Biometric Scans

Registration may be done using one of a number of different biometric scans such as ...

  • fingerprint scan
  • retina scan
  • voice recognition
In all cases, the attendance data can be analysed to produce reports about the attendance record, or pattern of attendance for an individual student or for a group of students.

Student record keeping may also be done on computer. A central database is stored on a networked file server. Data can be input from any workstation on the network.

A record of each student's progress can be viewed or edited, and teachers can identify any student that needs help.
