Health and Safety
Health and Safety issues associated with ICT include...

RSI - Repetitive Strain Injury.

Painful injury can occur to the tendons from using a mouse and keyboard too much. The same movements every day literally wear down the tendons in the hand or wrist.

Short rests should be frequently taken, and stretching exercises of the hand and wrist will help minimise the chance of RSI.

Dependency

There is a sometimes a problem of addiction particularly with young people playing computer games. This may lead to health problems such as lack of fitness or social problems where people do not mix socially.

Eyestrain

Too much use of computers can lead to eyestrain, particularly if the brightness and contrast are badly adjusted or the lighting in the room causes reflections on the monitor screen.

Properly adjusted monitors and a screen surround should help prevent eyestrain.

ELF Radiation

There is growing concern about possible health hazards from ELF (extremely low frequency) electromagnetic fields and computer monitors give off sufficient radiation as to be considered potentially hazardous.

Back or Neck Strain

Bad posture can cause painful strain in the back or neck. A properly adjusted chair and monitor should help.

Ergonomics is the study of the interaction between the worker and his environment.
