Idenity Theft and Fraud | |||
Identity theft is a crime where someone
else pretends to be you and uses your details to carry out transactions such
as purchasing goods, opening bank accounts, ordering credit cards and
claiming benefits. Identity theft is on the increase as a result of the ease with which it can be done. Gathering your details may involve simply going through your waste bins to find old documents such as bills or bank statements. Sometimes, a program such as a Trojan horse infects a computer and sends stored details such as passwords to the criminal's computer. Prevention of identity theft involves shredding documents and following security advice.

Fraud is deception for
personal gain.
Credit card fraud is a common crime as it is relatively easy to get credit card details by burglary or mugging or even intercepting transactions on the Internet. Often only the credit card number and the expiry date need to be known in order to complete a transaction. Never let your card out of your site when using it for a payment. It may be being copied!
