Working styles
ICT has changed the way people work. People have become more productive so the number of workers needed by an organisation has declined.

The types of working opportunity have changed from repetitive manual labour to ICT-related office jobs. Many manufacturing industries now have programmed robotic machinery to carry out the production.

Globalisation has meant the creation of jobs all over the world. Many telephone call centres are based overseas.

ICT has also affected where people work...

  • Internet and WANs have allowed teleworking - working from home
  • Advantages - flexible hours; more relaxed atmosphere; no commuting;
  • Disadvantages - lack of social contact; possible disruptions/distractions;
  • Advantage to company - no need to provide office space; heating; refreshments etc

Many job descriptions now require applicants to have some ICT skills.

Communication within an organisation has changed and workers would use...

  • emails to send messages or data to each other. They may be in the same office or on the other side of the world.
  • mobile phones
  • videoconferencing allows workers anywhere in the world to communicate and hold interactive meetings.

Changing methods of communication have allowed more flexible working hours.

The danger is that people will work for too long, and not be able to get away from work in the evenings or weekends.

The use of laptop computers has enabled people to work on the move...on trains or in hotels or anywhere that provides a wireless Internet link.
