The Internet | ||||
The development of the Internet has had
a huge impact on the way we live and
work.
The Internet is a WAN (Wide Area Network). In fact it is a network of networks that encompasses the entire world. It links computers together and allows them to pass information from one to another no matter how far apart they are. The computers on the Internet are linked together by
Each computer on the Internet is identified by a unique IP address. Some are static (always the same), while others are dynamic (different each time the computer connects to the Internet. Routers are devices that find the best paths to send data along. There will be many possible paths between two computers on the Internet in case some network links are busy or broken.

An IP address consists of 4 numbers (each between 0 and 255) eg. 145.217.46.68
Computers operate differently, using different processors and operating
systems. They can link with each other over the Internet because of protocols
- rules and standards which dictate how computers must communicate.

TCP/IP is an example of a protocol used by computers on the Internet.
To access the Internet a user needs to subscribe to an ISP
(Internet Service Provider) whose computer provides the link to the
Internet.

The World Wide Web is
a massive collection of web pages
stored on thousands of different computers all over the world. The pages
are linked together by hyperlinks,
and can be viewed by anyone connected to the Internet by using a browser.
Web pages are written as programs using a language called HTML
(Hypertext Markup Language) |
