Software and Data Misuse

According to the Computer Misuse Act(1990) ...

The following are offences ...

  • manipulation of financial software - eg making payments to a fictitious person.
  • illegally obtaining credit card numbers and using them to make payments for goods.
  • manipulating stored personal data - eg removing a criminal record.
  • data sabotage - hacking into a rival company's data and deleting or altering it.
  • developing viruses.
  • obtaining personal data to be used for blackmail.
  • using computer time to carry out unauthorised work eg using a company's computer to do a friend's payroll

Banks and businesses are unwilling to admit to computer crimes as it may destroy customer confidence.

 

 

The Copyright, Design and Patents Act controls illegal copying.

It is an offence to

  • use software without a proper licence (piracy).
  • download text or images from the Internet and using them without the owner's permission.
  • copy a program you use at work or school and running it at home.
