Email dangers
The extensive use of email has had many beneficial effects but it has also led to problems.

Viruses are small programs that can easily be sent along with an email attachment. Viruses can spread automatically and may do some damage to your computer.

The sender may not even be aware of the fact that a virus is being sent.

Virus checking programs should always be used.

Never open an email attachment from someone you don't know.
Emails may also contain inappropriate messages. (Pornography, drugs etc)

Email bullying can be upsetting to the recipient, and you should never send any abusive or offensive emails to anyone.

Never reply to any offensive or threatening emails. Report them to an adult and delete them.
Spam is junk email that you did not ask for. The more you enter your email address on web sites that ask for it - the more spam you will receive.

Never put your email address on a web site of your own. There are programs that collect email addresses from web sites.

Spam filters can be used to decrease the amount of spam you receive.
Phishing is used by criminals to try to get you to respond to an email and confirm personal details such as passwords.

Banks, Building Societies and Credit Card companies will never ask you to confirm your details or passwords by email - so do not respond to phishing emails!
