Have Your Own Device

In September 2020, a proportion of your course will be delivered remotely due to the pandemic.  The proportion will change in line with Welsh Government guidance.  We recommend you have your own device, a tablet, laptop or PC, so that you can fully participate in the course you have opted to study.

Students will need a device for taking notes in class, to access the internet, the College virtual learning environment (Moodle) and your Office 365 account. Student can use their device to participate in online and remote learning.  Student Support can provide assistance with a suitable IT device in certain circumstances, but it's advised that you have your own.

The College provides a wide range of fixed IT options to support your studies plus drop in IT facilities in libraries. The drop in IT facilities are bookable, see the Libraries page on Moodle for more information.  Wireless printing from your laptop is available using your college username and password.  More information is available on Moodle.

The College is upgrading the Wi-Fi to provide campus wide W-Fi on all sites.  After you have enrolled you will receive an email with your college username and password.   You access the college Wi-Fi (Eduroam) with your college username and password; instructions are available on Moodle and covered in the College online induction.

All students have access to Microsoft Office 365 and can download and install the applications onto their personal devices whilst in college. Students in Creative Arts and Computing also have access to Adobe Cloud services.  Specialist software is provided for students on college PCs and MACs, in specialist IT rooms.

You will have your own personal file store (OneDrive) that you can access from anywhere - as long as you have internet!  This is the recommended place to store all your work, as you can then access OneDrive regardless of your location or device. Your Microsoft Office 365 account, alongside OneDrive, also includes WORD, EXCEL and PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, etc.

Printing is taken care of too.  Each student has a termly allowance.  Printouts can be retrieved from any multi-functional devices (MFDs) in the corridors on campus using your student ID card.

The College uses the latest version of Window 10 which has inbuilt accessibility features.  You can adapt your devices and interfaces to make learning more comfortable for you.   Help is available on Moodle and from your course tutor.

What device?

The College provides specialist software for students in dedicated IT rooms.  Students need an internet ready device to access teaching materials on Moodle and Office 365 at home and in college.  The type of device depends on the apps you need to use for your programme of study. 

For students accessing the internet, Moodle and Office 365 a ChromeBook or a standard laptop would be suitable. For students needing to run specialist apps, a Windows 10 laptop would be the best option.

In most cases, students will already have a suitable device that they can use.  A suitable device can be purchased from numerous places including Amazon and Currys.  Students should speak to their course tutor if they have any questions about what device is best for their course.

The College is setting up an online shop with Academia to enable students to purchase device via monthly payments.  This gives students receiving EMA the ability to purchase their own device.
